two normal paths: repeater or hotspot

There are two normal ways onto USDMR IPSC3: through a repeater or by hotspot. Repeaters give the cleanest local operating path. Hotspots are ideal when you are mobile, travelling, or working outside repeater coverage.

repeater

Connect via Repeater

Program the correct repeater frequencies, colour code, and timeslot layout for your local USDMR repeater. Local and regional operation generally starts on the repeater first and uses hotspots as a convenience path rather than the default path.

Use the live Repeaters page to see what is connected right now and which systems are up.

hotspot

Connect via Hotspot

Hotspots connect using the MMDVM protocol. Duplex hotspots behave like two independent slots. Simplex hotspots only have one effective talkpath, and IPSC3 handles that automatically.

When a simplex hotspot moves to a 380x or other dynamic talkgroup, IPSC3 mutes TG 3100 and other competing traffic on that hotspot until the selected talkgroup has been quiet long enough to time out. This prevents the common drag-back problem without relying on hotspot-side parameters.

For Pi-Star setup, DMR-only recommendations and IPSC3 custom MMDVM options, read the Hotspot Configuration guide.

Use the live Hotspots page to confirm that your hotspot is registered, connected, and seeing current traffic.

⌨️ Before you key up

  • Confirm your DMR ID and callsign programming are correct.
  • Use the correct timeslot for the talkgroup you intend to use.
  • Leave a pause before speaking so linked systems and announcement audio can settle.
  • Do not assume a hotspot and a repeater behave identically; simplex hotspot behaviour is intentionally stricter.
IPSC3 note: simplex hotspot talkgroup switching is managed with automatic muting of competing traffic — no extra hotspot parameters needed. Repeater operation remains the cleanest local path.
