📻 DMR Programming
⚙️ Channelised & Codeplugs
DMR radios operate in channelised mode — a channel is not just a frequency. It bundles colour code, timeslot, talkgroup contact, power, admit criteria and display name.
Most radios are programmed via computer. The files are called codeplugs, and each family uses its own CPS software.
⚠️ Someone else’s codeplug
Don't write another radio's codeplug directly — firmware/model mismatch and you might transmit with someone else’s DMR ID.
Ask on the US DMR Network [OFFICIAL] Facebook group for a basic codeplug from the same radio. Open it in CPS, study it, then modify. First change: your own DMR ID.
⏱️ Slots & Talkgroups
TDMA provides two 30 ms timeslots in one 12.5 kHz channel. Each slot carries an independent voice path.
TS 1 dynamic
Dynamic and wide-area talkgroups
TS 2 local
Local and network call channels
Talkgroup contacts act like discrete channels inside a slot. Users on one TG won't hear another. Program the talkgroups you need per repeater/hotspot.
🆔 DMR ID & digital contacts
Every user has a 7‑digit ID from radioid.net. QuadNet IDs begin with 320. It’s sent with every transmission.
Download all/part of the worldwide database into your radio as a digital contacts list to display names/callsigns.
📋 Programming workflow
- Connect lead, read radio first.
- Program your DMR ID in general settings.
- Add talkgroup contacts (see live Talkgroups page).
- Create channels for each repeater / hotspot / TG combo.
- Group channels into zones — one per repeater/area.
- Write codeplug back and test each channel.
🧩 Minimum channel setup
| Parameter | Value |
|---|---|
| Colour code | always 1 on USDMR |
| Timeslot | 1 or 2 (per talkgroup) |
| Repeater RX / TX | frequencies |
| Power | high / low |
| Talkgroup contact | e.g. W3X |
| Channel name | repeater + TG |
| DMR ID | yours, correct |
Repeating channels: per talkgroup, only name/TG/timeslot change; RX/TX stay. Use zones (CPS term) to group channels — one zone per repeater.
🎛️ Radio params & GPS
Button functions, backlight, scan lists, audio — all programmable via CPS. Customise after it works, keep a known‑good backup.
Hotspot notes: Simplex = one talkpath. Duplex = two independent timeslots. If odd, check scan / listen‑only / block mode.
✅ Check your programming
Watch live dashboards while you key each channel briefly. Verify talkgroup & timeslot.
If the colour code, slot, talkgroup or DMR ID is wrong, the network can’t help.
